Milan Day 4

Outside Milano Centrale with genuine Italian fascist architecture. A giant version of classical architecture with a military edge.

An intercity train

The train had a bin. Milan is very clean despite graffiti. There are bins everywhere and they are emptied regularly- they are never full, even near Duomo.

Brunate funicular. These run to time well. They stay in the station until the time it is due to depart, and then on the dot, they leave.

In the 4×4. The walk up to the lighthouse was long and steep so we paid to go in the 4×4.

The view from the top. In the distance is Switzerland. The local train we took from Como actually terminated in Locarno in Switzerland.

Unfortunately the lighthouse was closed due to maintenance so we missed the 360 degree view, but it was still spectacular and very much worth seeing.

Outside the Funicular. We are glad we went early. The queue at midday was huge!

The wise woman of the Sand People apparently lives here.

Helen in front of Piazza Cavour.

On the boat trip on Lake Como. It was really fun and a perfect temperature on board, although it did leave 30mins late.

Weird chimneys

The house below was owned by Russian royalty. You can stay there for a week, for only 250,000 Euros.

Italy has lots of squat toilets. You need to pay for many, although not this one. They are generally well maintained.

Ice-cream for lunch!

3.50 Euros for a three scoop ice-cream. I had hazelnut, nutella swirl and one I can't remember.

Helen had Tiramisu, yogurt and passionfruit and creme brulee.

Temple of Alessandro Volta- a museum about the famous inventor, who invented the battery and discovered methane.

Como football stadium

Villa Olmo - Swithun is sad because it is completely covered in scaffolding.

This grotto was marked as a toilet on Google maps. It was badly rated.

Statue of Alessandro Volta, who was born and lived in Como.

Catthedrale Santa Maria Assunta (Duomo of Como)

Mediaeval building: Casa dei Cagnoli

Torre di San Vitale - city gate, built in 1192

Highly decorated townhouse

Getting  a little warm.

Visiting a pizza restaurant- free appetisers

We weren't huge fans of the graffiti wallpaper

Cocktails at the Monkey bar: Golden Monkey and Negroni

Free appetisers with the drinks!

Terra Gelato for dessert - Gianduja, Strawberry sorbet and cherry crunch.

Salted caramel, cheesecake, nocciolata

 Steps walked: 24,095; 9.89 miles
