Milan Day 6

Heading to Bergamo on the train, then onto the Funicular to reach Cita Alta (the old city)

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

Cappella Colleoni

Inside Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore - the interior was more impressive than any cathedral we've ever visited.

Inside the crypt of Duomo...someone is watching you!

Walking the streets of Bergamo

Warm focaccia topped with slices of beef and a giant chunk of melt soft cheese; Swithun loved his Bergamo beer.

Polenta cake - the traditional baked treat of Bergamo. It contains sponge, layered with hazelnut cream (this is a modern twist), encased in marzipan with a chocolate bird on top.

Political Correctness doesn't exist in Bergamo

The Torre della Campanella bell tower in the citadel area. There is a chorus of bells ringing across the old town every hour.

Grapes are not quite ready yet.

St Augustine's gate - one of the four gates of the Old city walls

San Lorenzo gate

View from the city walls - we walked the complete circuit.

We caught the Vigilio Funicular to see amazing views over both the old and new city.

San Giacomo Gate (St James)

In several cafes we saw an automatic machine to pay by cash which dispenses change. It is similar to a self service machine but the cashier still scans everything for you.

Two flavours of pizza in one from Pizza Alla Fara: Diavola with Gorgonzola (best), and another with sausage.

We had booked a train to return to Milan but were an hour earlier than expected. The tickets say you can change the time at any point prior to travel, but there is fine print that if the tickets are too cheap, they can't be changed. So we reached the platform where the earlier train was waiting and attempted to book tickets by phone for it. Unfortunately the bank declined the card so we tried again. Suddenly, no tickets were available; we suspect it was due to the train departing in less than 5 minutes. So we had to stand on the platform watching the train leave and wait for the next one.

It wasn't all bad - we walked down a wide street and bought some gelato for dessert from Surya Gelateria - dark chocolate, coffee, hazelnut.

 Step count: 23,476; 9.63 miles
